Being Green and Going Green: Is there a difference?

In this episode we talk to Dan Antonioli a seasoned green builder, licensed general building contractor, permaculture designer, and social justice advocate.  We talk about the concept of “Going Green” which Dan believes extends far beyond responsible construction. His company Going-Green.Co emphasizes sustainability not as an end goal, but as a process for moving the world in a sustainable, green direction. Dan has founded two green communities: 611Ecovillage and Laytonville Ecovillage. He has 20 years of green building experience and is a passionate environmentalist. And the Youth shall lead the way… Students from the Cayman Islands talk to students from the Lower Hudson Valley in NY about initiatives to protect Mother Earth

Sometimes one person can make a difference, and I point to Greta Thunberg, who sat on a bench in front of the Swedish Parliament building and held a sign that said: School Strike for Climate. That single act turned into a world wide youth movement. I am happy to have four amazing students who are charting their own paths to reduce carbon emissions and reduce the effects of climate change. Evie and Jordan, students from the Cayman Islands, are leading the charge to protect the coral reefs and other areas of the island from overdevelopment via their group Protect Our Future. Gabriel and Aaron students from the Lower Hudson Valley, a suburb of NYC, are involved in different initiatives, and are working on a project to help save a forest in the area from being developed into large luxury homes. They also work on a local green podcast for their town, to help educate residents about different environmental issues and initiatives which affect their community. In the words of Mohith Agadi: “Forests are no one’s property to destroy; They are everyone’s responsibility to protect.” We must also protect the Coral reefs, which represent some of the world’s most spectacular beauty spots, and are the foundation of marine life: without them many of the sea’s most exquisite species will not survive. Ice ages have come and gone. Coral reefs have persisted. For more information go to protectourfuture.org and preservebuttonhook.org #RaiseYourEcoConsciousness

Dr. Rachel Licker, principal climate scientist with the Climate & Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists: Science and the Law

Dr. Rachel Licker, principal climate scientist with Union of Concerned Scientists gives us great information about working to reduce carbon emissions and what steps need to be taken to make that happen. According to the latest IPCC Report, limiting global warming will require major transitions in the energy sector. This will involve a substantial reduction in fossil fuel use, improved energy efficiency, and use of alternative fuels. Humans are destroying forests and polluting waterways. What is it going to take to stop the planet from frying? How can we reduce global warming and stop the oil and gas industry from drilling and extracting every last drop of oil from the ground? The answer could be with the lawyers. Yes, you heard that right. There are currently various actions in many states in the US which are challenging the fossil fuel companies to come clean and state, much like the tobacco industry, that they knew long ago, that they were polluting and causing a climate crisis. So, we the people, are going to go to court to try to stop these companies from decimating our planet. We turn to science for the answers, and some scientists believe that legal challenges will make the oil companies pay for their detrimental actions and misinformation. For more information go to ucsusa.org. Courtney on Health: Beat the heat while you exercise and eat in the summer time

On this episode Courtney discusses eating (and exercising) to beat the heat! Exercising in hot weather puts extra stress on your body. If you don’t take care when exercising in the heat, you risk serious illness. Both the exercise itself and the air temperature and humidity can increase your core body temperature. Coping with summer’s heat should include eating lighter foods that provide energy and nutrition. How can you eat and exercise to beat the heat? Courtney has some great tips on eating light on a hot summer’s day, and how to keep cool exercising as the sun beats down in the summer months. Summer is for Bugs: Say NO to dangerous pesticides.

Our resident landscape and wildlife expert Victoria Alzapiedi of New Castle Healthy Yards, has insight into the use of pesticides, and gives us some tips on how to maintain our landscape without killing beneficial insects. While people are bug phobic and want to rid their land of certain bugs, especially ticks, which seem to be the villain, our constant spaying of chemicals is hurting us, our pets, the land, the air, the water, and is causing the bug population, especially pollinators, to disappear. According to a fact sheet on beyondpesticides.org studies show that hazardous lawn chemicals are drifting into our homes where they contaminate indoor air and surfaces, and expose children to levels ten times higher than pre-application levels. We can and should do better. For more info go to the New Castle Healthy Yards Facebook page. How to Be Alive: A Guide to the Kind of Happiness That Helps the World, with author Colin Beavan

What makes us happy is always a universal question. I try to be happy, but many things of late seem to make that difficult. According to our guest this week, author Colin Beavan“the most energetic and helpful people are those who are aligned with their whole selves. Awake people thrive. Communities, organizations and societies filled with awake people also thrive.” In his new book, How To Be Alive: A Guide to the Kind of Happiness That Helps the World, Colin focuses on how our happiness and the happiness of others are interdependent. He is also obsessed with the following three points:

1.Living an authentic, purposeful life that has a meaningful impact on the world. 2. Helping other people to do the same. 3. Creating a world where the freedom to find that kind of human dignity is available to everyone.

Broadway Green Alliance Leading The Great Bright Way!

There is no business like show business, and the magic and entertainment of live theatre creates a special place to take a break from this crazy life, and enjoy performances by some of the most talented people on the planet. Speaking of the planet, we need to take care of Mother Earth, and film, TV and theatre productions are often wasteful operations. Luckily, the Great White Way, now the Great Bright Way, as it has LED efficient bulbs, is becoming greener, thanks to the help of Broadway Green Alliance (BGA). We talk with our guests Molly Braverman, Director of BGA and Dillon Yruegas, Assistant Director of BGA, who play a major role in creating initiatives and practices to green the Broadway community by putting these initiatives into effect:

  • Greener Reopening ToolKitWe developed free and accessible educational resources, like our Greener Reopening Toolkit, to help advance our industry’s sustainable production practices.
  • Touring productions reported recycling programs product use at over 80% of theatres. The Touring Green program has offset over 10,000 tons of carbon through Native Energy.
  • BGA led the change all of the lights on Broadway to energy-efficient LED and CFLs. That’s over 100,000 actual bulbs and saves over 700 tons of carbon each year.
  • Kept over 17,000 pounds of textiles out of landfills since 2016 through the BGA collection bin in the Actors Equity Building.
  • BGA is expanding its ongoing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access work; there is no climate justice without racial justice.

Kyera rocks the music world with eclectic soul. ‘Passion Amapiano Remix’ with Goya Menor and ‘Passion’ featuring Carlos Santa.

Music can be a powerful resource for the human spirit, and my guest this week, Kyera, is a testament to that human spirit, as she pivoted from a career in writing for television and films to writing music and performing.

Kyera took a leap of faith to pursue her passion.  Her perseverance, unique voice and trust in herself landed her in collaborations with award-winning producers and artists like the legend, Carlos Santana, who is featured on her rock anthem, appropriately titled, “Passion.” The lyrics of “Passion” carry the message much like an anthem to empower people to be courageous and believe in themselves. Kyera has now teamed up with Nigerian rapper, Goya Menor, who’s viral sensation “Ameno Amapiano Nektune Remix” has been streamed 9.7 billion times. Their new “Passion Amapiano Remix” is an anthem with the power to connect people all over the world during these very trying and divisive times. Courtney on Health Fabulous Fiber

My mom Ruthie would have Shredded Wheat for breakfast a couple of times a week, she ate a very healthy diet and lived to 101. My brothers went for the sugary stuff, Lucky Charms comes to mind. However, one healthy cereal that my older bros would ask for on some rare occasions was Wheaties. The primary reason that they would ask for it was because it was, and still remains, the breakfast of champions. There were always photos of athletes on the front of the box who excelled in their sport. Eat Wheaties and you will be a champion and a healthy human. Truth be told my brothers thought it tasted like cardboard and would always add sugar, and sliced bananas. My mom won round one of the cereal wars primarily because Wheaties contains fiber, and my brothers tolerated it because of the slogan, a teaspoon of sugar and the sports connection. The American Heart Association recommends we should have between 25-30 grams of fiber per day, yet most of us are barely get half of that (we average 15 grams for the entire day). The health benefits of consuming fiber rich foods have been known for decades, and High-fiber foods may also make people feel full sooner, and for longer, which helps curb overeating and weight gain. Courtney gives some great info on how to include fiber in your diet and the benefits it gives. For more info go to courtneygravenese.com, follow her on Instagram @clgwellness. FORESTS ARE THE LUNGS OF THE PLANET AND WE MUST PROTECT THEM AND SAVE THEM FROM BEING DESTROYED AND DEVELOPED.

On this episode of TMSOG we focus on actions being taken by community residents to preserve and protect a beautiful pristine property in Northern Westchester, which is a wildlife habitat, has over 670 trees, is a watershed area, a carbon sink and contains Indigenous Native American Cultural Stone landscape and other remnants of their life on that parcel.   We talk to Tracey Bilski and Stacy Morgan of the Preserve Buttonhook Forest group, who work tirelessly to save this amazing open space. They give us a status update on property, as well as the history of the Native Ceremonial Complex Stone Structures, the land in question and the water shed issues. The Indigenous Native Americans culture must not be erased, and the sanctity of their land and history must be preserved. We must educate the citizenry to honor their footprints, as they were the keepers of the land centuries ago. We are the keepers now, and we need the collective will of the community to help preserve and protect this land. New Castle Healthy Yards with Victoria Alzapiedi

Happy Earth Day and Earth month. We need to wake up and take action to protect and preserve Mother Nature. She keeps on giving, but we don’t give back enough. We keep taking, but we don’t seem to take the action that is needed to reduce our impact. What can we do in our own backyards to create a healthier thriving place for trees, plants and animals? There is so much wildlife to protect, and it is now baby season in the wild, and the babies need our help.

Victoria Alzapiedi, our resident wildlife expert talks about what we can do to help wildlife exist in a safe space and what the best practices are to maintain our landscape. Sustainable development is key to reducing the world’s carbon footprint. We are at the tipping point in a warming planet, and we need to change our habits and use programs available to help reduce global warming. We need to start taking action on a local level, as practices and solutions start in your home community. It is important to raise awareness of what is being worked on and what programs are in place to help curb emissions, and reduce the use of fossil fuels. In this episode we talk to Dan Welsh and Lauren Brois of Sustainable Westchester, which is a nonprofit, consortium of Westchester County local governments, that facilitates effective collaboration on sustainability initiatives. Dan Welsh is Program Director for Westchester Power, Community Energy Program. Dan’s responsibilities include business operations and program development for Westchester Power, New York State’s first Community Choice Aggregation Program (CCA). Lauren Brois is the Director of the EnergySmart HOMES/Grid Rewards campaign, which works to transform the local uptake of residential clean heating and cooling options in an effort to support the goals of New York State Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) Initiative. Dan and Lauren work to create campaigns to help residents use electricity more efficiently while saving money. You can start by joining a CCA, getting a home energy audit, signing up for Grid Rewards, learning about heat pumps, geothermal energy, solar and more. Dan and Lauren work to bring socially responsible, environmentally sound, and economically viable solutions to Westchester residents which create healthy, resilient, sustainable communities. Check out the Grid Rewards program, EnergySmart Homes, Westchester Power (CCA) by going to sustainablewestchester.org Please subscribe to The Many Shades of Green Podcast. #RaiseYourEcoConsciousness #BEEGREEN
