Tasha Young Candidate for Supervisor for the Town of Greenburgh, NY

Not happy with the bus system in your city? Worried about potholes? Annoyed that your back yard keeps being flooded when it rains? All these issues are handled by local government officials. You can tell them your concerns, and share your vision for the future. If you need to dissent you must make sure someone will hear your voice, and your local government is the best place to start. Peter Cole C. Onele said “True democratic governance is doing what your people want, not just what you want for your people.”  Our guest this week is Tasha Young, who is running for the position of Supervisor of the Town of Greenburgh in Westchester County NY, and wants to make a difference in people’s lives.

Tasha believes that Greenburgh has an opportunity for growth, transparency, and a fresh outlook. Tasha Young, served as the Chief of Staff to New York City Council Majority Leader Laurie A. Cumbo, and is challenging thirty-year incumbent Paul Feiner, who is vying for a 16th two-year term as Greenburgh Town Supervisor. If elected, Tasha will make history as the First African-American, and First Woman to run the town of Greenburgh since it was founded in 1788. For more info go to votetasha.com. Courtney on Health: Live Long and Prosper in the Blue Zone

If you want to live longer and be content, the people who live in the Blue Zones are great role models. Centenarians in the blue zones are the longest-living people in the world. They aren’t trying to eat “healthy” or live to 100—they aren’t counting calories or reading food labels—they simply eat what is local, in season, and readily available. They live life with a purpose and rarely retire. Courtney discusses the foods that comprise Blue Zone diets (mostly high in fiber), and delves into the mindset needed to live long and prosper. Beyond Plastics with guest Alexis Goldsmith

In the movie The Graduate, which was released in 1967, there was a famous line about plastics. The scene was between Benjamin Braddock, the graduate, played by Dustin Hoffman, and Mr. McGuire, played by Walter Brooke. Mr. McGuire said to Benjamin, “I want to say one word to you. Just one word. Benjamin: Yes, Sir.  Mr. McGuire: Are you listening? Benjamin: Yes, I am. Mr. McGuire: PLASTICS. Benjamin: Exactly how do you mean? Mr. McGuire: There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it. Cut to 2021 and plastic has overtaken our environment. Our guest Alexis Goldsmith, National Organizing Director of Beyond Plastics is helping lead the way to reduce plastic use, and tackle the plastic problem.  We discuss the connection between plastics and fracking, plastics and climate change, and the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. Environmental Justice, Just Transition, Community Solar are discussed with guest Jose Tulio Galvez Contreras of Solar One

We talk to our wonderful guest, Jose Tulio Galvez Contreras who is a Program Manager and Solar Researcher at Solar One, where he manages solar energy projects for affordable housing in NYC, and leads research on the impacts of these projects in underserved communities. There are many people in communities that do not have a voice at the table, and live within a stone’s throw of vacant lots used as dumping grounds, or fracked gas wells, or substandard housing near a highway or transportation hub, which spews toxic polluting fumes into the air, causing lung disease and other illnesses. Who represents their interests, and who will stand up for their rights? We need to bring environmental justice to the forefront to help develop new policies on greenhouse gas emissions, as the need for action within communities that are most affected by the changing climate is more important than ever. GrowthBusters founder Dave Gardner talks about population growth

“We’re faced with a gigantic challenge that we haven’t been prepared for, either in our genetic evolution, or more importantly, in our cultural evolution.” – Paul Ehrlich Biologist Professor of Population Studies, Stanford University and Author of The Population Bomb

There are almost 8 billion people on this third rock from the sun, and the question is, how do we take care of everyone, and at what cost is this growing population having on natural resources, climate, the economy and basic day to day living. Population growth is an important topic, and we need to start thinking more about the issues affecting population. We talk to Dave Gardner, founder of GrowthBusters about the need to keep population in check as growth cannot be infinite. Dave is a filmmaker, writer and producer who directed the documentary GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth, which is coming up on the Tenth Anniversary of its release. He also has a GrowthBusters podcast and works with the organization World Population Balance. For more info go to GrowthBusters.org. Courtney on Health Proper Nutrition from toddlers to teens

We all love family dinners, but we often hear parents tell their kids at the dinner table is “you will eat what I tell you to eat, and finish what’s on your plate!” Should we let our kids choose what they eat, and do they have to clean their plates? Kids should be able to explore different foods and expand their pallet. A variety of food helps them make good nutritional choices, which will lead to a joyful eating experience. While pizza, mac and cheese and hot dogs are staples in many homes, how can we get children to eat healthier foods?  According to the Mayo Clinic, nutrition for kids is based on the same principles as nutrition for adults. Everyone needs the same types of nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. Children, however, need different amounts of specific nutrients at different ages. A balanced diet of protein, fruits, veggies, grains and dairy will lead to a healthy diet. In this episode, Courtney takes us through what’s best for your kids to eat to stay fit and strong. Green Faith and Earth Day with special guest Reverend Fletcher Harper

People of faith make up over 80% percent of the world’s population. Our religions teach us to care for the earth and each other; we seek to live by these values. Green Faith is helping to build resilient, caring communities and economies that meet everyone’s needs while protecting the planet. The era of conquest, extraction, and exploitation has given way to cooperation and community. We had a wonderful and informative conversation with our guest Rev. Fletcher Harper, who is the Executive Director of Green Faith, and he is a pioneer of the global religious environmental movement. Reverend Harper helps spearhead the faith-based fossil fuel divestment movement, organizes faith turnouts at major climate mobilizations, and is a co-founder of Shine, an international campaign that supports women and community-led renewable energy access initiatives in Africa and India. He is the author of GreenFaith: Mobilizing God’s People to Protect the Earth. For more information go to greenfaith.org.
