We Got the Message, Now It’s Time to Get Busy, with Oscar Michelen Esq. and George Polisner (Civ.Works)

Ooh child Things are gonna get easier

Ooh child Things’ll get brighter

Ooh child Things are gonna get easier

Ooh child Things’ll get brighter

Some day, yeah We’ll put it together and we’ll get it undone

Some day When your head is much lighter

Some day, yeah We’ll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun

We start TMSOG podcast with the song Ooh Ooh Child. The lyrics are a
classic metaphor for better days ahead, freedom, and warmth after a dark or stormy period. The song was written by Stan Vincent and released in April 1970 by the Chicago sibling group The Five Stairsteps. The track arrived during a turbulent era in the United States. The lyrics acted as a soothing balm for a society under immense stress. Over the decades, the song has been covered by numerous artists (such as Nina Simone and Hall & Oates) and famously sampled in hip-hop, most notably as the core hook in Tupac Shakur’s “Keep Ya Head Up”. It also reached a new generation of listeners during the climactic dance-off scene in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.

Millions of people in the US and abroad have taken a collective breath and a sigh of relief, and for the moment we are basking in the glow of the Blue tsunami that flooded the electorate, and brought forth democratic control of the U.S. Congress. There is much work to do to repair the damage to our nation and the world. The American people must continue to fight for a better economy, better healthcare, better education and for the right to live and work without worrying about wars, ICE, and AI invading our lives. I have voted in every election since 1972 when the voting age changed from 21 to 18.  The draft was still going strong, and protests filled the streets against the Vietnam War. The thinking was that if 18 year olds can fight and die in wars, they can vote, however, they can’t drink a beer… So where do we go from here?  How do we change things for the better while investigating those who have trampled the Constitution and our rights, especially during the last two years. It has been ten years of chaos, with a break when President Biden was at the helm, yet I still feel that ten years of my life have been stolen. We have much work to do, and we must let our voices be heard. On this episode of TMSOG special guest Oscar Michelen joins us to talk about what’s next, as well as his work to overturn wronful convictions.
