We talk to our wonderful guest, Jose Tulio Galvez Contreras who is a Program Manager and Solar Researcher at Solar One, where he manages solar energy projects for affordable housing in NYC, and leads research on the impacts of these projects in underserved communities. There are many people in communities that do not have a voice at the table, and live within a stone’s throw of vacant lots used as dumping grounds, or fracked gas wells, or substandard housing near a highway or transportation hub, which spews toxic polluting fumes into the air, causing lung disease and other illnesses. Who represents their interests, and who will stand up for their rights? We need to bring environmental justice to the forefront to help develop new policies on greenhouse gas emissions, as the need for action within communities that are most affected by the changing climate is more important than ever.
